March brings together two moments that powerfully shape how we think about leadership: B Corp Month and Ghana Independence Day on 6 March. Though distinct in origin, both encourage reflection on responsibility, community, and the lasting influence of our decisions.

This year’s B Corp Month theme calls on certified organisations to reconnect with their founding purpose and the values that inspired their certification. For us, becoming a B Corp was never about transformation, but affirmation. It recognised principles that have long guided our work and strengthened our commitment to them. Today, driven by our purpose to deliver data dignity and champion diversity, we continue striving to create positive impact whilst maintaining the highest ESG standards in everything we do.

That sense of purpose feels especially meaningful as we mark Ghana Independence Day.

Ghana holds a special place in our identity. With our CEO, Dyann Heward-Mills, originally from Ghana and members of our team based there, the country’s history and cultural heritage continue to influence how we lead, advise, and serve clients around the world.

In May 2023, members of our team came together in Ghana for a deeply meaningful experience that strengthened interpersonal connections, celebrated our community, and allowed us to engage directly with key institutions, including the Ghanaian Data Protection Commission and Cyber Security Authority. These conversations grounded our work in lived experience and helped bridge cultural understanding with regulatory context.

They reinforced a key lesson: that authentic leadership grows from shared roots, not imposed frameworks.

At HewardMills, leadership is rarely individualistic; it is grounded in community, accountability to others, and the understanding that decisions carry lasting impact.  Beyond formal engagement, Ghana offered something equally important: perspective. From walking through Cape Coast Castle, to exploring the energy of Accra and the vibrancy of Makola Market, the experience reinforced how history, community, and commerce intersect and how leadership is inseparable from social responsibility.

These experiences continue to inform how we work globally with our clients and cross-functional teams. Leadership, in this context, acts as a coordinating force that aligns governance, ethics, and operational reality, rather than treating them as separate concerns.

Whether at a national level or within global organisations, leadership must be exercised with an awareness of impact, respect for autonomy, and commitment to serving the wider community.  Independence enables leadership, but crucially, responsibility gives it legitimacy.

From this foundation flow the values and principles that shape our global practice today:

  • Ethical governance that goes beyond minimum compliance and is grounded in accountability and trust
  • Purpose-led leadership that aligns decision-making with long-term organisational and societal impact
  • Responsible growth that recognises resilience is built through foresight, restraint and integrity

These principles underpin our regulatory advisory, consultancy, and Data Protection Officer (DPO) services, as we support organisations worldwide in navigating the complexity of rapidly evolving data protection and governance expectations.

Working with clients across industries and regions, we continue to combine regulatory expertise with a values‑driven approach that helps organisations build trust through data dignity, ethics, and transparency.

Our B Corp certification also reflects continuity rather than change, demonstrating that purpose and performance can reinforce one another.

As active members of the global B Corp community, we continue to collaborate with businesses that are driving progress with integrity and using business as a force for good.

As a reminder, fellow B Corps can access our ongoing 25% partnership discount, designed to make ethical data protection more accessible to organisations that share this commitment.
